Returning the favor from "Why Don't You Play in Hell?" and "Gag"!

Comments[edit]

Background and development[edit]

  • "the first beat that was conceived by West and record producer Charlie Heat" - I would personally change the bolded "and" to "with"
  • "Charlie Heat affirmed that West is a genius and he allows the rapper to 'speak on his process, but some people are just gifted at things' and he is unique in his listening. The producer put forward that West is the best musician he has met 'at coming up with a good product', feeling working with him expanded his mind in production, art, and life" - I think most of this could be shortened to something like: "Charlie Heat praised West as a genius, writing that he'd let West "speak on his process, but [that] some people are just gifted at things."
  • "for the name change from Swish to Waves" - I think using quotation marks would be more accurate here since its the title of a song
  •  Not done these were both about the album title not song title --K. Peake 09:18, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      • Ah, I see. Could you change the text to "for the album's name change from Swish to Waves"?
  • "This also helped inspire the spiritual themes presented across The Life of Pablo and according to Watkins, his songwriting contributions were for the hook" - do these points relate to each other? Otherwise I would split it into two sentences, so: "the spirtual themes presented across The Life of Pablo. According to Watkins, [...]"
  • "when listening to an edit in New York featuring Brown" - "in New York" can be cut
  • "A demo of 'Waves' was recorded by West collaborator Chance the Rapper" - "West collaborator" can be removed
  •  Not done he should be introduced --K. Peake 13:21, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would suggest changing his introduction, though, since Chance the Rapper seems to also be notable outside his collaborations with West. I think rapper, singer-songwriter, or record producer (all from the lead to his page) are good options.
  • "which he posted snippets of to Snapchat on February 16, 2016" - change this to something like "who posted snippets to Snapchat on February 16, 2016"
  • "Around 20 minutes into an interview with" - I would cut this to just "In an interview with"
  • "with him receiving a writing credit on it" - change this to "and receives a writing credit"
  • Convert [15] to Cite podcast and add parameter |time=1:22:37
  • I would personally change the caption for the Chance the Rapper photo to talk about how he fought for the song to be included, but I'll leave this point to you.

Composition and lyrics[edit]

  • I think this is all good!
  • Actually going to add a small comment: [17] to the song's gospel style says "Ye's self-described gospel album", which doesn't make it a secondary description. I don't believe that the artist's comments are usually included in these sections. It is still properly sourced with [18] though, so it could just be removed without any changes to the text.

Release and promotion[edit]

  • "Hotel co-owner Anne Gracie told Daily Record that West made "the perfect guest — charming, courteous and polite", taking pleasure in offering hospitality to his full team and welcoming him to return any time." - is this sentence needed? It sounds quite PRy. Otherwise, I would merge it with the previous sentence like: "and the hotel co-owner stated that they took pleasure in West's visit". The name of non-notable individuals who are not named again don't need to be mentioned by name.
  •  Comment: is it wrong to give info about how they felt on his visit specifically for this video? --K. Peake 13:21, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • I personally think the comment reads like it was made for press purposes, and maybe doesn't hold that much weight. I won't force it out of the article, but I would personally at least shorten it.
  • Otherwise good!

Critical reception[edit]

  • Change url-status on [27] to dead (or am I just having a weird issue?)
  • "an opportunity to achieve Paul-like redemption" - I'm a little unclear on what "Paul-like redemption" means. Is there a music reference I don't get?
  • "'the most beautiful track'" - clarify with "of the album", or similar
  • The Chigaco Times review also has a more negative comment with "It's a point that might've been better made in the context of a more concise and focused album than The Life of Pablo" which I think could be worked in

Commercial performance[edit]

  • "in a total of five countries worldwide" - this could maybe be shortened to just "in five countries"
  • The final "|" on [54] can be removed

Live performances and appearances in media[edit]

  • Does [63] have a subscription-lock for the full article, or is the rest just video? I can't find the HipHopDX part
  • "and a video of it was shared by HipHopDX via Instagram" - was it an official/endorsed post or just the outlet doing regular business? I would remove the comment if the latter
  • "In August 2016, Kardashian listed the track among her top 28 favourite songs by West" - is the opinion of West's wife (for the purpose of this article) relevant for inclusion?
  • "made available in WAV format" - can probably be cut. Usually, content about covers and remixes (and the sorts) just need to describe the chart/cert history and secondary-analyzed sound.
  • For the section header, could "appearances in media" be changed to "other appearances" or "other versions"? I don't think anything in the paragraph is precisely a "media appearance"

Credits and personnel[edit]

  • Is it not standard to link all people in these sections, including the artist (West in this case), even if they are linked above?

Charts[edit]

  • Is [72] the right source for the Heatseeker chart? I don't see "Waves" at number nine

Certifications[edit]

  • No issues!

Infobox and lead[edit]

  • "'Waves' is a song by American rapper and producer Kanye West" - Peaking at some of your other Kanye articles, most seems to just use "rapper" so many cut producer?
  • Could you add this to the infobox with the Music video template set to "Audio" as the header?

Conclusion[edit]

(I did intend to finish this review today, but ended up only getting this small bit since I'm running a little tight on time. I'll try to get it done as fast as possible tomorrow.) IanTEB (talk) 20:02, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That's all for my comments. This article is awesome; reading about how the various producers and writers altered the track is very interesting. All issues presented should be fixable without too much difficulty! Copyvio check comes out good, and all other GA are met apart from the issues I've outlined.
